A Wrinkle in Time
Yes, that’s Rick Perry on the cover of the latest issue of TIME. I’m not sure why TIME is obsessed with close-up shots, like so close up you can see every wrinkle and every nose hair. When I’m in photos, I make sure the camera is at least 40 feet away from me and that it is pitch black. Perry looks like he’s trying to pull a George Clooney with that five o’clock shadow but GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. I intend to purchase the magazine for the first and only time once it hits the newsstand so I can draw a goatee on him. (Yes, this is what I do with my time. It could be worse. I could be drawing goatees on myself.)
Note to media: Stop saying Perry commands a “Texas-sized lead” in the polls. We know Texas is big. Just say big.
In the interview, Perry stands by his assertions that Obama is a socialist, Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, Israel is better than Palestine and immigrants have funny-sounding last names. The most eye-opening part of the interview, however, was when Perry was asked what book has influenced him most over the past decade…besides the Bible. Oh that’s just cruel.
I don’t know about influencing me the most — I’m reading a couple of books on China right now that are most interesting. After a trip to Beijing and Shanghai and Taiwan, I realized how important that region of the world is to America and to the world. So Kissinger’s book on China, I’m wading through it, and I’m reading another book by Aaron Friedberg [A Contest for Supremacy] that is a really fine read about China, their very long view of the world and our need to really pay attention to what’s going on in that part of the world.
So he’s wading through a couple of books on China because he’s finally realized that China is vital to our interests. He wasn’t asked what he was reading now, he was asked what book has had the most influence on his life. He could’ve said The Secret or The Purpose Driven Life or any number of so-called inspirational books that allow the masses to think they’re deeply contemplative students of life. I would have said The Great Gatsby or, obviously, Eat, Pray, Love.
(I apologize for the late post. It’s my husband’s birthday and I’ve been baking and hanging streamers all day. Surprise!!)

/with apologies to madeleine l’engle, who I’m fairly certain would not have taken too warmly to the American Family Association and the rest of the Response cretins.

As to the most influential book on Perry’s thinking…..It was one of Ayn Rand’s (probably the one were the “hero” rapes the dependent female before he builds large buildings shaped like you know whats)….The problem is that Perry didn’t actually read it….His “aides” (read “ghost minds”) read it and drafted all his “lines” (read answers, speeches, etc.) to reflect its “philosophy” (sic).

Noone is ever going to get caught out by the “What books are you reading”, “What newspapers do you read” question ever again. In this case Rick’s minders, aware that foreign policy will be one area where people will worry he will be weak, have told him that he is reading these books.
