I am surprised I have the strength to write. I’m actually beginning to amaze myself.

First things first, congratulations to all the Obama supporters. He couldn’t have had a better night. Unless, of course, Hillary gave a concession speech instead of a “IT AIN’T OVER YET” speech. I’m not sure why Chris Matthews (yes, I was actually watching MSNBC, home to one of the least attractive panels ever) called it “charming.”

I suppose you could see it that way, despite the fact that she opened with, “Not too long ago, my opponent made a prediction… I would win Pennsylvania, he would win North Carolina and Indiana would be the tie-breaker. Well, tonight we’ve come from behind, we’ve broken the tie, and thanks to you it’s full speed on to the White House!”

Blink. Blink. Now, you know (oh? really?) Hillary’s my girl. But even I couldn’t help thinking, either she’s delusional, or she’s got something SO HUGE on Obama that it will knock the superdelegates for a loop (i.e. he’s gay; he really is Muslim; he fathered a black child).

Obama’s victory speech (in fact, I think he may still be talking if you want to catch it) was basically a carbon copy of every other speech (Xerox this!), but, as usual, he delivered it with such aplomb that no one seemed to mind, especially that big guy in a blue shirt, holding up a sign, flailing his arms, and pumping his fist.

And what was with the troll? DID YOU SEE THE TROLL LADY?!

Mr. PL, of course, ate it up, declaring to our friends, “Our Next President!” To which I responded, pointing to myself, “Your Ex-Wife!” (I’m not sure if this is even a valid threat anymore.) Paul Stekler, to his credit, didn’t gloat like I did two weeks ago at his house. However, when I told him that my birthday’s next week, he said, “What are you, 39?” I almost threw my glass of wine in his face, but you know how I hate to waste good wine.

So here we are. Last night was definitely a game-changer — will she? can she? should see? go on? The party is still split. She has the older vote, the blue-collar vote, the Hispanic vote, and (by a slimmer margin) the woman’s vote. He has the college-educated, Gucci- wearing, latte-drinking vote, the young vote, and the black vote.

Is there really any other way to unify the party than an Obama-Clinton ticket? Would she rather be the Senate Majority Leader? Or would she filibuster every bill from the White House? Stekler was convinced (after a few too many) that Obama will pick Clinton as his running mate. But not Hillary. Bill.

If you noticed Bill last night during Hillary’s speech, aside from the fact that his beet-red head looked like it might explode at any minute, he looked almost… disgusted. Like, I WOULD BE SO WINNING THIS. Unfortunately, Billy, you helped to undermine your wife’s campaign right from the start. You’s a dick.

You can imagine how conflicted I feel this morning. I have posted a sign on my office door saying “No Gloating.” I’m in here with the lights off, feeling sad, then angry, then exhausted, then hung-over. Which is to say, it’s like any other day.

If she’s still in it, am I still in it with her? Or, like most people today, do I think she should bow out gracefully? I will continue to ask myself questions (aloud, they already think I’m crazy) and will report back to you tomorrow.

Until then, seriously, congratulations.

I’ve been holding off commenting over here, just because I am not a pink person (despite being pink on the inside), but today I just have to say it.

I love Hillary. I love the way she campaigns (except for the stupid dirty tricks…smart dirty tricks are fine, but dumb ones — “change you can xerox!”? — just hurt her), I love the way she doesn’t give up, etc.

But it’s time. I mean, if she won IN by huge margins, yeah. She’d be in still, and I wouldn’t care. But Wright/Ayers/Flagpins/Bitter/OrangeJuice/McCain-would-be-better-than-Bush/etc. all have worn thin. Anything else (including fathering two black babies) would completely undermine him and ruin her street cred with the rest of the Democratic party.

I say Hills for Majority Leader.

That way you have three women in charge in Washington (Pelosi, Hillary, Barry).

Hell no to TM absorbing ITPT. We’d have to clean up our language, give up our freedom, become part of the corporate mainstream, and read Burka! (Kidding, Paul. I love you.) Anyway, fight the power, baby.

And damn it, PL. A perfectly good night (Astros win, too!) was ruined by worrying about you. I know it meant a lot to you, and I can remember how I felt watching the talking heads after Pennsylvania. Kudos for being up and about and barely surly at all!

I can’t explain it, because I think she is more qualified, I think she would achieve more, but lately, the old school campaigning and fight to the bitter end approach has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Somehow, it appears that Obama tries to rise above it, and Hillary continues to play that way - as if she has something to prove about how to campaign. You can’t blame her given all she has gone through - but then again, maybe you can.

Perhaps this is naive and McCain will run all over Obama, but I can’t help wanting to take the high road. And losing gracefully is so much better than the alternative, isn’t it?

Anyone who compares the Obama supporters of today to Tom Delay’s crowd is just being ornery. What I’m fascinated by is how so many people are now back to comparing BO to JFK, etc. The herd mentality of politics can be trying.

One very fair comparison between the Repubs of 02 and the Obama campaign of today is that both are winners at out fundraising the other side. The brilliance of Obama is taking the online tools Dean was looking at and making them really, really work.

Re: 61. The Other Guy

I think one of the key differences in the candidate’s fund-raising has been Obama’s better management of small contributors but lets not kid ourselves that his funding is all from individuals going online and donating $20.

Obama’s top 5 contributors:
Goldman Sachs $544,481
University of California $371,266
Ubs Ag $363,257
JPMorgan Chase & Co $353,808
Citigroup Inc $331,946

Hillary’s top 5 contributors
DLA Piper $505,200
Goldman Sachs $445,350
Citigroup Inc $406,752
Morgan Stanley $402,845
EMILY’s List $323,567

So whoever wins it looks like we’re going to be getting whatever Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JP Morgan, UBS and Morgan Stanley want… except of course Obama is above that sort of politics.

Re: 66. treehugger

I pulled those stats from opensecrets.org.

In terms of individual contributor’s Hillary’s contributors are as follows:
$200-$499 23014 $5,932,462.00
$500-$999 14963 $8,320,689.00
$1000-$2300 19255 $24,985,233.00
$2300+ 21606 $69,167,976.00
$4600+ 6955 $32,590,611.00

Barack’s are:
$200-$499 39978 $10,300,027.00
$500-$999 26435 $14,750,754.00
$1000-$2300 25187 $33,007,090.00
$2300+ 23414 $61,642,421.00
$4600+ 2292 $10,913,632.00

So basically 90% of Hillary’s funding comes from people donating $1000 or more whereas 81% of Barack’s comes from people at the $1000 or more level. Hillary definitely has more at the very highest level and Barack has moe at the bottom tier but that’s only an extra $5M.

Overall both candidates are still raising the bulk of their money at the level where people are giving because they have a special interest.

As an interesting but not surprising aside, the industry donating most to both candidates, lawyers, in the range of $15M to each candidate. But of course that wouldn’t be lobbying money would it …….

Interesting. So Obama leads in every category except donations over $4600.

Who knew that working, hard-working Americans, white Americans were able to give that much?

Re: 70. JohnCornyn’sBoxTurtle

I’m never going to try and deny that Hillary has lined up to take all the lobby money she can. All I’m thinking is that it looks a lot like Obama has been doing pretty much the same whilst making a campaign talking point our of saying he’s not doing it. Or are there really 23,414 people out there who like him so much that they are just going to give more than $2300 and not expect anything in return?

Thanks heavens someone is injecting the honesty back in to politics

Except it doesn’t look like Obama “has been doing pretty much the same thing.”

Do you really think that giving $2300 is going to get you something in return from the president? Seriously?

Re: 71. Jimbo

I don’t think they’re giving *more* than $2300. Isn’t $2300 the limit for individual contributions?
