Oh me of little faith…

The AP just called it. Hillary wins New Hampshire. Is anyone else hobbling around on their husband’s crutches in a drunken haze? (It’s because I’m a woman.) Did you hear that girls? WE WON. And, yes, the majority of women voted for Hillary.

The campaign is far from over. Hillary won by a slim margin. But if she had lost, she may not have survived. Now we have a real fight on our hands. For crying out loud, she did it. SHE DID IT.

(9:52PM. Obama is giving a fantastic speech, as usual. He started out by congratulating Hillary and asking the crowd to give her a round of applause. Classy. He’s a great speaker. I just don’t know if he’s a great leader.)

Truth be told, earlier tonight I was a wreck. Convinced that Hillary would come in second — perhaps a distant second if I listened to so-called experts — I started drinking early. Smooch, Wallflower and Tickled Pink came over (YES THEY’RE REAL PEOPLE) and suggested I take some Valium. Instead, I bounced off the walls and ate 500 chocolate chip cookies.

My Auntie Cathy called me from Virginia because she was as nervous as me. (And, if you must know, I get my knees from her. Except hers are slightly smaller.) So, yes, an unnatural obsession with politics runs in the family. It’s because we’re Irish.

Hillary held a consistent lead THE ENTIRE NIGHT but CNN refused to call it. Even after the AP and the rest of the major networks (including ITPT) projected Hillary as the winner. Oh, might it be because CNN was SO COMPLETELY WRONG about the outcome? Or, is Wolf Blitzer just a sexist?

I apologize for the all caps. That is completely unnecessary. Tom Brokaw is now chiding Chris Matthews (/hate) for the media jumping to conclusions and making false predictions. He says we should let the voters decide. (Mr. PL, meanwhile, suspects voter fraud on the part of the HRC campaign.)

Hillary gave a good victory speech. Not a great speech, but a good speech. People say she’s a fake, she’s divisive, she’s polarizing, she’s corrupt, she’s too… I don’t know… CLINTON. But tonight, she’s a winner. Which means I can finally get a good night’s sleep. Without mixing codeine and shiraz.

Personally, I love it when the networks commit original sin by writing the byline before the game. Brokaw blew it once, Chris should have known better. Watching CNN wait until the last possible moment to call it to give their weeks long worth of reporting some sort of credence was, as always, fun to watch.

If it is wrong to vote against her because she is a woman, it is wrong to vote for her because she is a woman. My guess is that she did not win because of any of her stated positions but rather because the establishment political hacks backing her in NH figured out a way to get out several thousand voters who would vote FOR her primarily because of her sex. How sad that issues like sex or race affect voters choices either way. Clinton got the win because her operatives better know how to play the game in a country that to a large extent is populated by people who can’t get beyond their own predjudices.

This polling business has me bamboozled.
Did we just witness the Bradley Effect, whereby honkies tell pollsters they plan to vote for the black candidate because they don’t want to look like racists, but then, in the privacy of the voting booth, vote for the white candidate?
It’s sometimes referred to as the Wilder Effect, because in 1989 everyone in PL’s family told pollsters they planned to vote for Doug Wilder, an African American, for gov of VA. He had a 10-point lead in the polls on the day before the election, then won the election by less than one point. Racists.

Who they’re blaming for this late showing and a big vote for Hillary Clinton? They’re blaming Chris Matthews. People are citing specifically Chris, not only for his own views but as a symbol of what the mainstream media has done to Hillary Clinton.

MATTHEWS: Which website is this?

MADDOW: This is Talking Points Memo dot com. And you’re being cited, anecdotally, not statistically —

Big-time Bradley Effect in Virginia (even though Coleman lost by about a point).

But in New Hampshire some 18 years later? I think it goes back to the tired and trued demonstrable fact that young people don’t vote and old people do — big time.

CNN and some of the others got embarrassed when they called the 2000 election for Gore, and by the morning they were wrong. And they had a great point when Dartmouth and UNH hadn’t returned their votes yet. I’m not sure I would have called that race, either, given history and the chances that it could have gone the other way with the students. There’s such a thing as being too careful, but if they’d called it too fast, they would have been criticized as well.

You are DEAD ON right, as is alex re happy Republicans.

The worst part is that *both* Clintons, especially Bill, are associated with going very personal/negative on Obama (”false hopes,” “fairy tale”).

So, in addition to the 47-49% who would never vote for her, you can now expect a VERY effective Republican effort to suppress minority turnout if she’s the nominee. And this time they won’t even have to lie.

Re: 43. treehugger

Well, given that the difference was less than 1,500 votes at one point and we’re talking about both Dartmouth and UNH, the math theoretically worked out in Obama’s favor. Or at least it did until the results came in.

They don’t always explain the numbers when they make their projections - or don’t - but there is, actually, a method to the madness. I can see how some might interpret it as wishful thinking - and who knows, I’m not going to make that determination - but practically, it was the safer way to go to wait.

And what’s the rush? They get blasted for calling it too early all the time, anyway.
I remember PL getting all hot under the kneecaps when they called it for Obama in Iowa after something like 11 percent of the precincts in.

I wasn’t paying much attention to the numbers there, though. PL had assigned me the job of barker in front of the Stephen F, trying to get folks to COME ON IN AND TRY YOUR LUCK AT THE GOLDFISH TOSS so she wouldn’t have to drink alone.

/She drank alone.

If I had to guess as to why the polls were so wrong, I’d say that - after reading the numerous stories on this subject right before the polls closed - it was partly because a lot of people said they weren’t making up their minds until it came time to pull the trigger in the booth.

I notice that the LA Times is reporting that after you remove the independent vote (4 out of 10 votes cast) Clinton won 45% to 34% which is a fairly decisive victory among the democratic faithful. I think SlowDownCowboy is right, Obama attracted a lot of people who, once their favorite candidates were eliminated by the threshold rule, just didn’t want to vote for Clinton.

After admitting how wrong they were to have already written off Clinton the pundits on BBC America last night were already reporting that this could be the start of a Howard Dean like collapse for Obama. I guess they never learn.
