I sat down to watch Meet the Press Sunday morning, wearing my wool cardigan and sipping a steaming mug of apple cider, pretending it was fall in Austin. A group of women sat around the table discussing Hillary Clinton. What is this, The View? If I wanted to see a bunch of opinionated women talking about Hillary, I’d ring up the Pink Mafia and give them a couple of martinis.

The show consisted of Judy Woodruff (PBS), Doris Kearns Goodwin (presidential historian / sometime plagiarist), Kate O’Beirne (National Review) and Sally Bedell Smith (no relation). Smith has just written a book, “For Love of Politics: Bill and Hillary Clinton, the White House Years.” I always knew politics was the glue that holds a marriage together.

I felt sorry for Woodruff when she went into a coughing fit that made it into the transcript:

Then, maybe, at least is, is—does well enough–(clears throat) excuse me—in New Hampshire to stay in the game. (Clears throat) Excuse me. But then–(clears throat) excuse me—he is in a position to pull off a surprise.

I think O’Beirne put something in her coffee. I half-expected poor Judy to pass out face down, leaving more air time for O’Beirne to expand upon the evils of feminism and pantsuits.

For those of you who missed the show because your idea of a fun Sunday morning does not include political punditry, here are some of the key points:

  • “I think she demonstrably has a sort of softer appeal than certainly she had during the ‘90s, and I think she’s a more effective campaigner than she was during her Senate race in 2000.” (O’Beirne)
  • “There’s an independence under her, and I think some of that anger about her has been softened because she’s her own person now, rather than the first lady.” (Goodwin)
  • “If we’re going to have two presidents in the White House, who’s going to be in charge, what’s the balance going to be?” (Smith)
  • (clears throat) “Excuse me.” (Woodruff)

It irritated me that no one called Smith on the “two president’s” line, when we know that for the last 7 years Cheney’s people have run roughshod over everyone else in the administration.

/My idea of a fun Sunday morning includes punditry and choo-choos.

My idea of Sunday morning fun is sleeping until 1 p.m.

But if you want to incorporate the Pink Mafia and martinis into that routine, I’ll gladly get out of bed for that.

This morning actually is apple cider weather. However, at no time, regardless of weather, should women express opinions about politics.

You’re absolutely right. We should instead leave the opion-expressing to men who wear panty hose on their head.

PL,

I imagine the conversation between those old war horses must be precious. Woodruff loves to retell the story of when a drunken George Bush called her a cunt in a KC steakhouse and threw up on her husband’s lap in 1988.

Or Doris’ story about when LBJ forced her to dress like a plush toy.

However, I think it is terrible the way the left-wing punditry is propagating the rumor that Kate’s labia have the consistency of 80-grit sandpaper and function as scratchy earmuffs. This is misogynous and unfair.

The fact is that they have 297 collective years of experience, and are no doubt terribly insightful vis a vis Sally Quinn’s regular high teas.

Did everyone on that show believe in evolution? Do they all recognize that the world is round? Because if so, they’re a step ahead of the women on The View:

/it’s 80 degrees in Boston up here. Global warming is so totally real.

Maybe PL can update the “About ITPT” sometime when she isn’t watching talking- head shows on Sundays or busying herself with the new job. Best in Austin 2005, woohoo! And whatever happened to the “staff?”

/and tell us more about this opium expressing.

I thought you were kidding. That is unbelievably disturbing. Is it just me, or does it seem like this country is reverting to pre-Scopes, pre-women’s suffrage ignorance?

Re: 10. treehugger
Smart ass. And anyway, it was opion, not opium. I don’t know what opion is.
