Actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson may be the Republican’s answer to Sen. Barack Obama. Except without the charisma. Or compelling life story. Or good looks and stunning physique. OK, so he’s more like the Republican’s answer to Sen. Joe Biden. But he’s getting all the buzz lately.

Naturally, I decided to check out his bio on ‘Law & Order.’ Thompson first appeared on screen in the film “Marie” in 1985, portraying himself in the fact-based story of a high-profile case he handled in Tennessee. Since then, he has appeared in numerous movies and television programs, including the features “In the Line of Fire,” “Die Hard II,” and “The Hunt for Red October,” and the series “China Beach,” “Wiseguy,” and “Matlock.”

Matlock?! Isn’t that the male version of ‘Murder She Wrote’?

Although Thompson hasn’t even announced his intention to run, he’s gaining in the polls. A USA Today/Gallup poll released Tuesday had him ranked third behind Rudy Giuliani and John McCain. Thompson’s got 12 percent, while Mitt Romney only has three percent.

I guess Romney shouldn’t have passed up that guest appearance on ‘China Beach.’

Admiral Josh Painter: This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.

Life imitating art. The price of oil went up $1.00/bbl today based on the rumor that Iran had fired a missle at one of our carrier groups (of two) operating a “naval exercise” in the northern Persian Gulf

/the two groups, with the carriers Stennis and Eisenhower are there to show that we are not powerless, despite the Iraq mess

Hopefully we have a Josh Painter in charge on the scene

Well it kinda worked in Cali for an actor (if you wanna call him that) to hold public office.

I hate politics!

I swear to God; if Americans elect a folksy, ‘down-home’, just-another-guy to the Presidency, I’m moving to Germany. I’m hoping we’re just not that blind and gullible.

By the by, G-boy the Yankee got appointed President in 2000, and what went down in 2004 in Ohio is something Fat Karl’s still gotta answer for.

/doesn’t that put him one under par in the Republican family values category

Mullah Dobson has already squelched the Thompson candidacy. “I don’t think he’s a Christian.”

He’s also been substituting for Paul Harvey’s national folksy right wing dribble radio segment, and is listed as a possible successor to Harvey.

Thompson’s record on fiscal issues is as disappointing as McCain’s, and unacceptable to economic conservatives.

Thompson is in favor of McCain-Feingold, has voted against tax cuts, has voted against free trade, has voted against GOP budgets…

This election is really shaping up to be the economic right versus the social right. Giuliani and Romney have solid fiscal conservative credentials but questionable social ones (Romney has “adjusted,” or “pandered,” whereas Rudy stood his ground). On social issues, we have two with solid social conservative credentials who are plausible candidates in McCain and Thompson, but have questionable fiscal credentials (Thompson tries to misdirect his fiscal moderate ways, like Romney in the social realm, McCain does not).

Don’t be suckered in, read their voting records and choose the best candidate who is right for you.

Thompson as Admiral Painter in Hunt for Red October:

Adm. Painter: What’s his plan?

Jack Ryan: His plan?

Adm. Painter: Russians don’t take a dump, son, without a plan.

There is no fight. The hegemony in the Republican party does have three wieners: yes to Scalia judges, yes to tax cuts, yes to endless Iraq. Anyone who cuts up the big tent (read: anyone but Jeb) cannot win the base and will lose to Hillary.

Grover Norquist, bathtub, drown, etc…
